San Diego Padres beat Los Angeles Dodgers 6-3 at the Petco Park – MLB news
San Diego Padres played a strong all round game to beat Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday, June 20, 2013 at the Petco Park in front of a 30,000 plus crowd. Gaining control midway through the game, the Padres never let go of it afterwards.
Pedro Ciriaco was the surprise package from the San Diego ballclub as the replacement shortstop- first hit an RBI triple in the seventh innings before going deep for a two-run home-run in the eighth innings.
Ciriaco, who has only been called to the ballclub as a replacement for Everth Cabrera, said that he was intending to get a good pitch to put away and his luck favoured him.
“I'm just trying to make it simple; get a good pitch and hit it hard somewhere and I got lucky,” Ciriaco said.
The Dodgers also do not look too pleased with how they have been dealing with Jason Marquis, the starting pitcher for the Padres. Manager of the Dodgers, Don Mattingly confessed that his team has so far failed to come to grips with his pitching.
“We haven't seemed to be able to solve the Jason Marquis riddle,” said Mattingly.
Jason threw six innings with just two runs and seven hits. He was unable to record a win despite a quality start and Nick Vincent got the credit after pitching in a single innings.
Bud Black, the manager for the Padres was quite happy with the performance by Jason as well and felt that he did well despite not having his best control over the ball.
“Tonight, he didn't have command of his sinker but kept the ball down,” Black said. “You saw a better true changeup. He didn't quite have a feel for his pitches ... but he still made pitches.”
Bud Black summed up the whole performance in a single sentence that reflected well on the team and the performance they gave in the night.
“That's how we do it,” said Bud Black.
The San Diego Padres now enjoy a 37-36 winning record so far in the season. They had a fantastic turn around after the All-Star break last year. A similar performance after the break this year can certainly make them strong contenders for a spot in the post-season.
