San Diego Padres beat San Francisco Giants 2-1 in close encounter at Petco Park - MLB
San Diego Padres seem to be turning it around as defeated heavy weights San Francisco Giants 2-1 on Friday, April 26 at Petco Park. This was the seventh victory for the San Diego ball club this season in 22 games.
It was an extremely close game where the Giants took the lead in the first inning. A two-run third innings however tilted the game in the favour of the Padres and the score line did not change until the end of play.
Andrew Cashner, the starting pitcher for the Padres, gave away just one run and five hits in all of six innings. He got his pitches in the right zone and was certainly not easy to put away.
Cashner got his first win of the season and is currently having a 1-1- record. He felt that he was not getting the pitches right in the start but with time, he settled well. He had to counter the aggression from the batters by showing some himself.
"I wasn't making pitches at the beginning of the game, but then I started to make better ones," Cashner said. "They're a really aggressive team so I was trying to make pitches in the zone. I wanted to cut down on my walks."
Bruce Bochy, the manager for the Giants was all praise for the pitcher as well. He said that Andrew threw down some high quality stuff that did not allow his team to get too many.
"He was great. Obviously we have to think that, because he shut us down. The guy has a great arm and he just shut us down. It's that simple," said Bochy.
Padres’ manager Bud Black was happy to see the performance from Cashner. He said that the pitcher was able to deliver the big pitches when they were needed. He hopes that Cashner will continue the strong showing in future games as well.
"The ability to make pitches when you need to ... that was great to see," Black said. "Today was another steppingstone. Let's continue on that path with Cash."
Tim Lincecum, the starting pitcher of the Giants was not easy to deal with either. He had earlier dominated the Padres in over six innings in a previous game. He was strong this time as well but could not stop the San Diego ballclub form getting runs. In
the seven innings he pitched in, he gave away two runs with six hits.
Padres’ manager Bud Black felt that the pitching quality was pretty similar from Tim to the previous game.
"I thought he was not too different from what we saw last weekend," said Black.
Overall it is a satisfying and much needed win for the Padres. They now have a couple of good results under the belt and should certainly look to build on them.
