San Diego Padres clinch a thrilling 8-7 win over Los Angeles Angels – MLB Spring Training
San Diego Padres clinched a thrilling 8-7 win over Los Angeles Angles at the Peoria Sports Complex on Friday, March 16 in Peoria, Arizona in their Cactus League encounter of the 2012 Major League Baseball Spring Training Session.
Padres’ pitcher Tim Stauffer did not have the best of times as he gave up five runs and 11 hits in just over two innings but the Padres rallied past their arch rivals 8-7.
"I've never felt extremely comfortable during spring, but I've never felt helpless, like I felt," Stauffer said. "There wasn't a whole lot I could do today. It wasn't meant to be today I guess."
"Nothing hurts," said Stauffer, a first-round draft pick in 2003. "It just takes a while to build it up and I've kind of been that way every year where velocity or life isn't quite there until late in the spring or going into the season. I wish it'd show
a little earlier, but it's just one of those processes. You've got to get those innings and the pitch count up."
With a 9-12 record and 3.73 ERA in career high 31 starts, Stauffer looked in decent form last season. Although things did not go his way in the game against the Angles, the starter is convinced that he will give better results in the upcoming games.
The Padres will be very content with the way they performed against one of the strongest American League West teams. Improving their win-loss record to 7-8, the Padres will be hoping to maintain their excellent form throughout this spring.
In the last decade, the Padres have done reasonably well at the MLB level. Their last American League West Division triumph was recorded in 2006. However, with more depth and variety in their hitting and pitching line-ups, Manager Bud Black will be hoping
that his team reaches the World Series tournament this year.
The Angles, on the other hand, will be disappointed with the outcome of the game. The Angles put up a solid fight to their credit but they were just not lucky enough. The players will take a lot of confidence from their performances and they will be looking
to bounce back strongly in their next spring game.
