San Diego Padres crush Arizona Diamondbacks 5-0 – MLB Recap
The San Diego Padres crushed the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-0 in the first game of their three-match regular series encounter on Friday, August 24 at Chase Field in Phoenix.
All three Padres’ pitchers played well and earned a great victory for their team. They never allowed the Diamondbacks to score even a single run which eventually landed them a decisive victory.
Eric Stults started the game for the Padres and pitched accurately for seven innings. He received three hits and struck-out four on his 2.68 ERA.
"He was good, He was working in, working out. His changeup was pretty good, then he started throwing that slow curveball the second time and third time we faced him. When a guy throws multiple pitches like that for a strike, it keeps you off balance, and we couldn't stay back and get anything going." Arizona's Chris Johnson said of Stults’ brilliant play which proved one of the winning factors for their team.
Later Stults also commented on his performance and explained in detail about all the aspects of his fast curving pitches as he said, "I don't know. I think it's just luck most of the time, I go up there just trying to put the barrel on the ball and was able to get hits, which I think was big because we had runners on base."
Reliever Nick Vincent pitched one inning and smashed for a one hit. He struck-out one while his ERA also remained consistent at 3.27.
Closing pitcher Tom Layne also remained calm on the mound for his one inning spell as he struck-out one Diamondbacks’ hitter.
On the other hand, Diamondbacks’ pitchers were reluctant to attack. They remained under pressure and lost in the end.
Especially their starter Patrick Corbin allowed four important runs on his four innings spell. He was also smashed for nine hits and one homer. He struck-out two while his ERA remained at 3.91.
Relief pitcher Brad Bergesen was also smashed for three hits and one run. Though he struck-out three but still his effort was not enough for the Diamondbacks to edge past the Padres.
