San Diego Padres crush Colorado Rockies 9-5 – MLB Recap
The San Diego Padres crushed the Colorado Rockies 9-5 in the first game of their three-match regular series encounter on Friday, July 20 at Petco Park in San Diego.
This was fourth straight victory for the Padres in the second half of the season. Since the start of second half, Padres’ performance has given their management a sigh of relief of getting into the next round.
Their consistent performances against the big Major League teams like Los Angeles Dodgers, Houston Astros and Colorado Rockies have given the entire Padres’ roster a huge confidence boost to keep looking their chances of getting a potential spot in the post-season.
The Rockies on the other hand, are not feeling comfortable since the start of the second half. Losing the very first series against the Philadelphia Phillies, they also lost the series against the Pittsburgh Pirates in their second three-match encounter.
Again on Friday night, the Rockies disappointed with their performance and lost the game with bitter humiliation.
Their entire roster could not match the Padres extraordinary fast pitching. They combined to add only five runs against the Padres nine runs.
Padres’ manager Bud Black commented on his team’s tremendous efforts and said, "Our guys picked up Jason, but he hung in there, Our offense picked up our defense. The guys are picking each other up across the board, and that's what it takes to win. That's
sort of how you draw it up, Those guys did a nice job."
Later Rockies’ manager Jim Tracy was disappointed and said, "We've been here before, Once again, plenty to talk about offensively. We didn't pitch in the early part of the game but got back into the game. You surrender seven runs prior to getting three outs
in the third inning, you're running uphill."
Both team’s starters on the other hand, did not play well and were hammered with some big hits.
Padres’ starter Jason Marquis gave five runs on his five innings spell as Rockies’ starter Drew Pomeranz received seven runs on nine hits. He was also hit with two homers in his three innings spell.
San Diego will be happy with their performance as they finally were able to get their offence moving. The Rockies will be looking to improve their game-play and become more competitive during this crucial part of the regular season.
