San Diego Padres defeat Arizona Diamondbacks 7-6 – MLB Update
Nick Hundley homered on Sunday, September 11 to help the San Diego Padres beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-6 to avoid the four-game series sweep.
The Diamondbacks which had won the previous three games seemed all set to rock, but failed at the most crucial stage.
This came with Heath Bell’s predictably streak. "We've got to stay positive," said Heath Bell, who pitched the ninth for his 37th save in 42 chances one day after allowing two homers in the ninth. "We could have taken three out of four. I messed up yesterday
and the second game we kinda blew it."
Arizona Diamondbacks had won the first three games by 4-1, 3-2 and 6-5. All the games were won by a small margin of a run which was seen in this game as well.
"You'd like to win them all but we didn't today," manager Kirk Gibson said. "We push through. There's a saying about playing 27 outs, playing to the end. It's something that's been preached for a while. It's part of their character."
Sunday’s game kicked off with San Diego Padres’ James Darnell scoring the first run as Josh Collmenter of the Diamondbacks failed to stop the hitter from scoring. The Diamondbacks intensified the running buzz in the third inning with individual singles of
Jesus Guzman, Anthony Rizzo and James Darnell that took the score to 4-0.
Wade LeBlanc, on the other hand, came down hard on the Diamondbacks’ hitters as the Padres starter barely allowed the offence to open their account. Nick Hundley, in the meanwhile, hit a two-run homer in the fifth to make it 6-0 for the Padres by end of
the fifth.
Josh Collmenter’s inability to contain Arizona’s hitters led to the change in the bullpen and brought Zach Duke. However, Jesus Guzman singled to left in the 3-hit one-run sixth inning to take the lead to 7-0 for the Padres.
Although things seemed to be going well with the smooth operator Wade LeBlanc on the mound, things changed in the bottom of sixth inning with the Arizona hitters kicking of a running spree. Henry Blanco was first to homer, Chris Young scored a two-run RBI
and Collin Cowgill singled to centre to bring the Padres lead down to 7-5.
Gerardo Parra brought it to 7-6 in the seventh inning with a single against Anthony Bass. That put an exciting twist in the seemingly one-sided game until a few moments ago. However, Luke Gregerson pitched a shut-out eighth and Heath Bell threw a hitless
and scoreless ninth to win the game by 7-6 for San Diego. The Padres put in a brilliant performance as they managed to sneak a much needed win from the Diamondbacks and avoid a series sweep.
