San Diego Padres defeat Arizona Diamondbacks 7-6 to bag consolation win – MLB Update
The San Diego Padres avoided a late assault by the Arizona Diamondbacks to defeat them 7-6 on Sunday, September 11 at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.
The Padres won this game after three-consecutive losses in the series, losing 1-3 the four-game series. They scored seven runs in the first six innings to impose pressure on the home side and later successfully avoided a late battering by the Diamondbacks
to restrict them to six runs.
Josh Collmenter has been a decent starter for the D-backs this season but received a warning in this game as the lowly-ranked Padres produced six runs from his four innings at the mound to hand him his ninth loss of the season with as many wins already to
his credit so far.
Diamondbacks are certain to make it to the playoffs this year and they will want Collmenter to get his act together before the heavyweights clash in the postseason. Collmenter was not satisfied with his performance either and said, "I think I forced through
some things. I didn't make some big pitches when I needed to. I left some balls up over the plate today and they were able to put the bat on."
However, he stated that his team’s chemistry is exemplary at the moment and no matter how poor the performance is, everyone backs each other. The Diamondbacks lost at home for the first time since August 8, making a strong statement on their ability to annihilate
teams at Chase Field.
Wade LeBlanc was charged for four runs in his spell of 5.2 innings for the Padres but was lucky enough to win his third start of the season. However, an earned-run average of 5.43 and five losses continue to irk his record for the season.
The Padres employed five relief pitchers in their attempt to defend a lead of three-runs and rightly succeeded in their plan. Three pitchers held games while Heath Bell improved his record to 37 saves for the season. Bell pitched a perfect ninth under immense
pressure to give the Padres their 63rd win of the season with 84 losses looming their record.
