San Diego Padres defeat Boston Red Sox 5-4 – MLB Update
San Diego Padres came forward as a resurgent team and beat the Boston Red Sox 5-4 at Fenway Park, Boston on Tuesday, June 21.
Anthony Rizzo hit a grounder to take a lead in the seventh which the team defended until the end of the game.
“The biggest thing is that we won," Rizzo said. "When you put the ball in play a lot happens. So I put it in play. They wanted a ground ball. They got it. I wanted to get the run in. I got it."
Interestingly, on Monday the Red Sox defeated the Padres by 14-5. However, San Diego put an altogether different game here since the start and occasionally built pressure on the Red Sox that was virtually irreversible.
"It's baseball," he said. "This is the best of the best and this is where everyone wants to be. It's a challenge. It's a grind every day. You've got to be on top of your game every day."
After Alfredo Aceves threw a scoreless first inning, the Red Sox Kevin Youkilis doubled to deep centre to score the first run for his team, earning an early lead. Youkilis, who has maintained an average of .279 in June, had his 13th run in 61
times he has remained at-bat.
However, Jason Bartlett and Chase Headley scored a single each in the second inning to reverse the Red Sox advantage and give the Padres a 2-1 lead. Mat Latos then came aggressively on the Red Sox offence and pitched a hitless second inning.
The Padres inched towards a strong position with Cameron Maybin and Nick Hundley’s consecutive singles in the third inning. Aceves gave up three hits and allowed two runs in the third that brought the Red Sox hitters into quick action.
Jacoby Ellsbury singled to centre in the bottom of third inning to bring the Padres lead down to 4-2 and Josh Reddick doubled to deep centre in the fourth to make it 4-3 for the Red Sox as Latos gave up two hits in the inning.
Adrian Gonzalez then drove in his second and the team’s fourth run in the sixth inning to level the score as the Padres’ starter started feeling the pinch of his inability to contain the Red Sox hitters. However, the Padres’ offence did not yield.
Anthony Rizzo grounded out to first to score the tiebreaking run in the seventh and then the Padres’ relievers threw unplayable pitches to turn the 5-4 lead into a glorious victory to level the three-game series with the magnificent Red Sox.
The Padres put in a tremendous effort to come back from a huge loss on Monday and take the victory. The Red Sox were unable to get their offence going and struggled throughout the game.
