San Diego Padres defeat Florida Marlins 14-3 – MLB Update
San Diego Padres put in a brilliant performance as they defeated Florida Marlins 14-3 at Sun Life Stadium on Wednesday, July 20.
"It was one of those night where you could have brought Bob Feller back, Tom Seaver back and (San Diego) probably would have done just as well," Marlins’ manager Jack McKeon said. "No matter who you put out there, they're going to hit."
After losing the first game by 4-0, the Marlins reposed their confidence in Ricky Nolasco. However, the starter was a victim in the strict definition of the word. As soon as the pitcher came on the mound, he was put on worst trial in the season.
Will Venable scored a single and Ryan Ludwick collected a two-run RBI to make it 3-0 in the very first inning. Before the tribulation of Nolasco ended, Jesus Guzman scored another single to make it 4-0. Aaron Haran pitched a shut-out first to keep the lead
intact.
The second inning was what turned out to be a nightmare for the Marlins’ Nolasco. Sending 22 of their hitters on the plate, the Padres opened the floodgates of runs against the straining Marlins’ starter.
Ryan Ludwick and Guzman were able to add no less than four runs in the two game-decider innings which saw Nolasco giving up 14 hits. It did not stop there, Cameron Maybin, Jason Bartlett, got a single each to collectively bring 13 runs in the first two innings.
"Very rarely do you hit balls hard and soft and they're all finding holes," Ludwick said. "And that's what happened."
For Nolasco, it was indeed a horrible dream. "I was just trying to battle, just trying to find a way," Nolasco said. "The worst start of my career. The thing I tell myself is you can't let this affect my next start.”
Having established a 13-0 lead, the Padres found Aaron Harang in their fold to keep the ball rolling. The starter pitched three shut-out innings and allowed a run in the fourth when Mike Stanton singled to left.
Hanley Ramirez and Dewayne Wise were able to collectively add a run each in the Marlins’ account, making it 13-3 in the sixth inning, but other hitters were efficiently contained by Harang.
Cameron Maybin got a single in the top of the seventh inning against Mike Dunn to score the 14th run of the team. Josh Spence, who replaced Harang pitched a shut-out seventh.
The closer Anthony Bass pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth inning to give the Padres a 2-0 lead in the three-game series with a comprehensive 14-3 victory over the Florida Marlins.
