San Diego Padres defeat New York Mets 6-1 – MLB Update
The San Diego Padres’ rookie Cory Luebke tossed a solid spell of six innings on Tuesday, August 16 to beat the New York Mets 6-1 at Petco Park.
With this victory, the Padres are back in the three-game series after they lost the first one by 5-4 in a hard fought encounter.
The Mets have only won three games out of the 13 they have played at Petco Park. After winning the first, the Mets did not seem in the same form that they exhibited only a night ago to overpower the San Diego Padres.
Padres had a rather vigorous start on Tuesday. Cory Luebke remained an unplayable starter on the mound. His first inning saw no hit, as he did not allow any run to the New York Mets’ hitters.
The Padres’ offence came up with a forward-looking approach. Orlando Hudson was the first one to single to right against Jonathon Niese followed by Nick Hundley’s single that doubled the lead by the end of first inning.
While Niese was able to pitch a few good innings to compensate the first inning disaster, Ruben Tejada had a single in the fourth to bring the Mets back in the game. The 2-1 lead, however, did not last long.
Aaron Cunningham had a sacrifice fly to right in the fourth to take the San Diego Padres lead to 3-1. Luebke, on the other, was strong, not allowing any runs to the Mets’ straining hitters to maintain the lead.
As the lead favoured the Padres right into the sixth inning, the seventh brought more joy. Cameron Maybin homered to take the lead to 4-1 while Orlando Hudson drove in the second RBI of the night to pile up the lead to 5-1.
Mike Pelfrey came to pitch the eighth for the Mets only to see another hit by Alberto Gonzalez that gave a safe 6-1 edge to San Diego. The Padres’ closer Erik Hamren threw a scoreless ninth to wrap up the game with a brilliant 6-1 victory for the Padres
to level the series by 1-1.
