San Diego Padres defeat San Francisco Giants 11-3 – MLB Update
The San Diego Padres beat the San Francisco Giants 11-3 in an epic display of power at Petco Park in San Diego, California on Saturday, July 16.
The Padres did not seem to be a team who have constantly been rated at the bottom of the weakest teams in the League. They started off in style in the first inning and from then onwards there was no turning back.
Barry Zito started for the Giants but would never have expected that he would be unglued in such a brutal manner. Zito could last for only 3.2 innings as the opposition thumped eight expensive runs in this span. Zito lost his focus and ended up with eight
errors to mess up the game in the early stages.
Jesus Guzman started off the scoring in style as he hammered a three-run homer in the first inning to establish a three-run lead in the onset. Jason Bartlett and Ryan Ludwick completed their runs when Guzman homered.
Bartlett added another run in the third inning before Orlando Hudson replicated Guzman’s accomplishment in the third inning when he too smashed a three-run homer out of the park. Hudson’s skier allowed Chris Denorfia and Guzman to complete their runs and
take the score to 7-0 within minutes of commencement.
Seeming unaware of the hammering, Bruce Bochy decided to continue with Zito at the mound until Cameron Maybin added the eighth run for the Padres in the fourth inning. By then, the game had already been sealed by San Diego as it was nearly impossible to
eliminate such a big deficit.
Pablo Sandoval showed resilience from the Giants and added a solitary run in the fourth inning to open the account. Miguel Tejada joined Sandoval in the effort to add runs for the Giants and went on to score his fourth home-run in the sixth inning but with
other batters not clicking, this was just not enough.
The Padres were in no mood of halting their scoring rate and the seventh inning witnessed the Padres adding three more to the total, taking their total score to 11.
Bartlett scored his third run of the night as Denorfia and Hudson added their second to complete the thrashing of the Giants who are comfortably placed among the top-four teams in the league.
Chris Stewarts’s run in the concluding inning was no more than just a consolation for the Giants.
Cory Luebke was exceptional at the mound for the Padres and his seven innings proved to be critical in ensuring success for the lowly ranked side. Cory gave away just two runs in seven innings to bag his third win of the season.
The Padres are now 41-54 for the season, completely reverse of the Giants who are 54-41 thus far. It will be interesting to see how the Giants hit back on the Padres when they meet on Sunday, July 17.
