San Diego Padres defeats Cleveland Indians 9-2 – MLB Update
The San Diego Padres put in a tremendous effort as they defeated the Cleveland Indians 9-2 in their Cactus League match at Goodyear Ballpark in Arizona on Wednesday, March 9.
San Diego’s triumph was designed by the left-handed starting pitcher Cory Luebke who struck-out four batters in just over four innings.
It was fifth victory for the Padres in spring while the opponents lost their seventh games. Indians faced their second-straight defeat after they fell to Arizona Diamondbacks with a huge 16-5 margin on Tuesday.
Padres remained impressive throughout the game. The club scored two runs in second, four in fifth and three in seventh to post nine on the table. Indians were not at their best as they managed only two runs, one in second and other in eighth.
Rookie right-fielder Aaron Cunningham achieved lead for the Padres in the second inning hitting a home-run off Indians’ spring debutant Carlos Carrasco. He went for two runs on four hits in three innings while he struck-out three batters. Another rookie
Anthony Rizzo followed Aaron when he hammered Carlos to earn one run.
The game had already gone in favour of the Padres in the second inning with a 2-0 lead. However, the Indians bounced back with first baseman Carlos Santana’s RBI run in second inning making it 2-1 but Indians failed to keep the momentum going. Indians made
their second run in eighth when Padres had already achieved nine-run lead.
Santana played for the first time after recovering from left knee injury he had in last August. Indians' manager Manny Acta was pleased of his performance and believed on his fitness in future games.
"He looked comfortable, but it was only one game," manager Manny Acta said. "He made some good plays and we'll play him there again."
Luebke and Jeremy Hefner were pitchers from the Padres who allowed one run each. Luebke received it on four hits while Hefner allowed one hit that went for a home-run. Non-rosters Anthony Bass and Colt Hynes both did a great job remaining scoreless striking-out
a combined four batters.
Indians’ 26-year-old David Huffner was the most expensive pitcher as he allowed four runs in two innings. However, Zach Putnam showed his strength restricting Padres’ players from hitting in one complete inning. Indians will play their next game against
Chicago Cubs at Mesa Arizona. The club has Justin Masterson as starting pitcher.
The Padres put in a good performance as they managed to restrict the Indians’ offence from scoring runs. The Indians will be looking to improve their performance during the spring session.
Padres will play their 12th game of spring against rivals Los Angeles Dodgers Thursday.
