San Diego Padres down Arizona Diamondbacks 2-1 at Petco Park - MLB News
San Diego Padres downed the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-1 in a fiercely contested game in front of a 23,000-plus crowd on Friday, June 14, 2013 at the Petco Park.
It was a battle between the pitchers and eventually Eric Stults came up on top to record his sixth win for the season, surrendering only two hits in nine innings to show his class. He has been instrumental in
the recent success the Padres have enjoyed.
Eric himself was pleased by the fact that he has maintained a good control and has been able to deal with the different situations with good control.
"For a guy like me, who pitches to contact, I have to be able to throw all four pitches well," Stults said. "Lately, I've been able to throw any pitch in any count, and I've been able to throw them all for strikes.”
Padres’ manager Bud Black poured praise on Eric for his tremendous effort at the mound. He said that it as a masterful performance and the pitcher can be tough to hit when he is pitching this well.
"That was a masterful performance," Black said. "They didn't threaten because Eric was outstanding. What you saw was a mix of pitches, any of which can be thrown for a strike. When Eric can do that, he's so tough.”
The manager also felt that it is not easy to hit him for the batters when they are unable to read what will be coming in next.
“When you don't know what's coming, that's incredibly difficult to deal with," Black said.
The D-backs got their only run in the first innings, courtesy to a sacrifice fly by Carlos Quentin. The two runs scored by the San Diego ballclub came in the sixth innings on a Logan Forsythe single which was
also aided by a fielding error by the Arizona ballclub.
The win has put the Padres just four games away from the Diamondbacks, who still reside at the top of the National League West and have a 33-34 win-loss record. It is a far cry from the 5-15 record that they
had during the early part of the season.
