San Diego Padres down Atlanta Braves 3-2 in close contest at Petco Park – MLB news
San Diego Padres downed the Atlanta Braves 3-2 in a close contest on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at the Petco Park in a low scoring affair.
It was a strong contest between Padres’ pitcher Andrew Cashner and Tim Hudson of the Braves in which the former eventually came out on top. The win takes Cashner to a 5-3 winning record this season with a reasonable 3.52 ERA.
Joe Thatcher, one of the relievers for the San Diego ballclub was extremely impressed with what Andrew had on offer. He felt that the pitching was quite exquisite.
“He's an ace,” said Thatcher. “He was incredible.”
Padres’ manager Bud Black was also pleased with the outcomes and felt that the pitcher was learning with each start that he was making.
“Every start he makes is a learning experience,” Black said.
The 26-year-old start said that he kept his calm and was not flustered by the situation. Every time he was in a jam, he was able to get out of it.
“Every time I got into trouble,” Cashner said. “I told myself to keep making pitches. I kind of toned it down after the first and got my changeup down in the zone. I think that was the biggest thing.”
It was also great for the Padres that Chase Headley, their ace hitter, got a home-run in the game. This was Chase’s first extra base hit in 51 at-bats. He went deep in the bottom of the first innings to get some form back.
The Padres were able to score a run each in the first three innings. Nick Hundley got an RBI double in the second innings to get his team in the lead. Carlos Quentin got an RBI single in the bottom of the third to help his team get three runs on board.
The Braves were able to score in the first and then in the sixth innings but were unable to get the tying run. Luke Gregerson made his third save of the season.
It was a good win for the Padres who are now getting closer to the .500 mark. The team certainly appears to be getting back into the reckoning for a spot for post-season provided they continue the good work for the rest of the season.
