San Diego Padres down Toronto Blue Jays 4-3 in a 17-innings affair - MLB News
San Diego Padres downed Toronto Blue Jays 4-3 in a game that lasted just two minutes less than five hours and went all the way into the 17th innings at the Petco Park. The game started on Friday, May 31, 2013 but ended
up after the date had changed.
The game did not have a lot of flare and the scoring by the Blue Jays took place in the second and the fourth innings. The Padres got on even terms with a three run fifth innings. Jedd Gyorko doubled and all three runs were scored
on the same hit, with some help from J.P. Arencibia, the Blue Jays’ catcher.
As both teams were unable to score, the game kept on lingering on and on. It was eventually Jesus Guzman who got the winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventeenth to bring the long night to the end, much to the relief and
please of the home crowd.
Richard Clayton, who was to start the game on Saturday, eventually finished the game that had entered the new day.
The pitcher said that he hoped to win a game on Saturday but he did not expect this to be the game.
"I was hoping I would get a win today. I was assuming it was going to be later in the day," said Richard.
It was Richard’s first win this season. He now stands with a 1-5 win-loss record with some injury issues that he has faced.
Padres’ manager Bud Black said that the decision to call in a starter as a reliever was made on the basis of need to win the game.
"We talked about it, whether to use a position player or go to one of our starters, and we felt that was the thing to do," Black said. "We wanted to win the game. We played to win the game. We took Clayton's start tomorrow out
of the equation and we decided to use him tonight and go for the W. I think that's the way you have to do it."
The win certainly will add to the spirits of the fans and the players alike who are going to be back for another contest tomorrow.
