San Diego Padres drub Miami Marlins 5-0 at Petco Park - MLB Update
San Diego Padres got the better of the Miami Marlins by an impressive margin of 5-0 on Monday, May 6, 2013 at Petco Park. The game saw some good batting from the Padres’ batters and some really good pitching from Andrew Cashner who recorded his second win
this season.
The Padres now stand at 14-18 win-loss record for the season. They are currently on the fourth spot in the National League West, only half a game ahead of Los Angeles Dodgers.
The 26-year-old Andrew Cashner was pitching in his fourth start and currently stands with a 2-2 win-loss record. He threw down over seven innings and did not surrender a single run as he gave away just four hits.
Padres’ manager Bud Black was pleased with the performance that was given by Andrew and felt that he had made a great comeback after a tough time in Chicago in the previous week.
"I like the fact that he bounced back after a rough game last week in Chicago," Black said. "He came back with a little bit of determination to prove that he's more of this type of pitcher."
Andrew himself was pleased with his performance and said that his time in Chicago was not something that he liked. He was unable to execute his pitches to his liking which is very important to have success.
"Any time you go out, you want to compete and you want to execute pitches," Cashner said. "I feel like when I was in Chicago, I just didn't execute pitches. I left too many pitches down the middle."
The Padres scored in four different innings and never scored more than two runs in an innings. The highlight of the ballgame was the home-run by rookie Jedd Gyorko. The San Diego ballclub had a total of five hits during the match and were helped by two errors
by the Marlins in the field as well.
At the receiving end was Marlins’ pitcher Wade LeBlanc who had his fifth loss in seven starts and has yet to record a victory this season.
Bud Black expressed his liking with how the pitching unit performed as a whole. He also liked the performance of the batters who were able to connect when it mattered.
"We've started pitching well, the bullpen did a nice job, and we've got timely hitting," Black said. "I think that's sort of the recipe for victory. That's what you do when you win."
It was indeed a great performance by the Padres who will be looking to win some games in order to get back into contention for the post-season. It is a desire that the manager expressed before the start of the season and they will need to work really hard
to achieve that.
