San Diego Padres edge past Atlanta Braves, 5-4 – MLB Update
San Diego Padres were outstanding in all departments as their batters scored crucial runs and pitchers threw the ball in perfect line to give their team a convincing 5-4 victory against Atlanta Braves at Turner Field, Atlanta on May 31.
Mat Latos pitched economically as he threw six innings with an ERA of 3.97 and permitted two runs on five hits including two earned runs. Latos struck-out seven batters and gave away four walks on 106 pitches.
The Padres opened their scoring account in the third inning and took a 1-0 lead when Chase Headley doubled to deep left-centre and Jason Bartlett scored a single run. In the very next inning, the Braves went ahead 2-1 by adding two runs. Brian McCann and
Eric Hinske both contributed two runs on the drive of Freddie Freeman during the fourth inning.
Chris Denorfia posted a tie run in the fifth inning when Headley hit a grounder into a double play. The game was level 2-2 at the end of the fifth inning. Sixth inning passed without any run. Both teams scored runs in the seventh inning as the Padres stepped
on the gas and blasted three runs while the Braves were able to add only one run.
Eric Patterson, Denorfia and Headley each singled during the seventh inning to complete a three-run campaign. On the other side, Diory Hernandez scored a single run on the RBI hit of Chipper Jones. The score-card moved to 5-3 after the seventh inning. No
score was added in the eighth inning from any batter but the Braves added one run in the ninth inning to cut their deficit 5-4. Jones singled to left-field and Jordan Schafer posted one run.
Ryan Ludwick was unable to score a run but went 4-for-5. The Padres’ Manager Bud Black was content with the performance of Ludwick. Speaking to reporters, Black said, “You see a real confident player now. He's making hard contact with the ball.”
The Braves’ starter, Mike Minor was a little bit shaky with the ball as he threw six innings with an ERA of 5.06 and allowed three runs on eight hits.
