San Diego Padres edge past Chicago Cubs 2-0 – MLB Recap
The San Diego Padres edge past the Chicago Cubs 2-0 in the first game of their three-match regular series encounter on Monday, August 6 at Petco Park in San Diego.
Padres’ offence played wonderfully and earned a great victory for their team.
"Those guys, they come to pitch, There is a resiliency and a mindset that you come to pitch," Padres' manager Bud Black said.
Padres’ experienced players all performed well and never showed any loop-holes in their game which progressively worked really productive for their decent victory.
San Diego played as one unit and supported each other in all areas of play as they dominated the Cubs.
On the other hand, the Cubs did not play their natural game and lost in the end with bitter humiliation. They were reluctant to open their offence which could have done much better in their Monday’s outing rather playing defensively which proved disastrous for them.
Despite the Cubs’ pitchers performing well but still it was Padres’ focus which did not give any chance to their dire offence to take control of the game. Instead they were never even able to score a single run.
"A tough day for the kids, That's what they're here for, to see this kind of pitching and make those adjustments," Cubs' manager Dale Sveum said.
Cubs’ Travis Wood pitched six innings and allowed two runs and five hits. He also allowed two earned runs on his 4.77 ERA but still his performance was not enough for his team.
"(Monday) was another grind, I was behind a lot of hitters but I was able to pitch out of a lot of stuff. We just came up a little bit short," Wood said.
Padres’ starter Eric Stults however, played well and earned a good victory for his team.
"That first inning was bad, kind of a grind, I threw a lot more pitches than I wanted to. After that I was able to get some quick outs," Stults said.
He remained calm on the mound for 5.1 innings and did not allow any run while he struck-out five Cubs’ hitters.
