San Diego Padres edge past Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 to break five games losing streak - MLB News

The San Diego Padres have so far been unable to bring the form they had last year to the ballpark but they showed some great fight to beat the really hot Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 at Petco Park on Wednesday, April 25, 2013.
Brewers nine game winning streak finally came to an end with the defeat. The Padres though would be more interested in the fact that it arrested their own five games slide.
Padres have so far struggled in the season and have a 6-15 win-loss record which is well below par by their own standards.
In the game, pitcher Edinson Volquez picked his first win of the season after pitching well and not surrendering even a single run in seven innings. He came into the game at the back of a woeful 8.84 ERA.
Edinson got rave reviews from the opposition as well. Left fielder Ryan Braun said that Edinson was too hot to handle and the team is well aware of his capabilities from previous experience. Ryan said that he had a good command of the ball and it was a challenge
to take him on.
"At any point, you run into a pitcher that's on the top of his game, and we knew we were in for quite a challenge," said Braun. "We've faced him enough in the past to know that when he's throwing strikes, he's challenging. He had command of all his pitches
tonight."
Catcher Nick Hundley was very pleased with the outcome of the game and said that it felt like a real win.
"That reminds me of how we win games," Hundley said.
The pitcher himself was a happy man at the end of the day as he performed well and picking up a win. He now stands at a 1-3 record this season.
He said that he wanted to remain calm and pitch well.
"I don't want to rush myself to the plate," Volquez said. "Every time I throw a bullpen, I want to calm myself down."
The 29-year-old did not issue any walks in this game and it was a relief for him.
"And no walks," Volquez said. "It's about time."
Petco Park, home of the Padres, is traditionally known to be a pitcher friendly ballpark. Runs did not come easy for either of the teams and the Padres went ahead with a run each in the fourth and fifth innings. Although the Brewers scored at the top of
the ninth, they could not get another run that was needed to keep the game alive.
San Diego Padres have gotten a much needed win. It is, however, important that they are able to build on this win and get a streak of victories going. They have the potential to do that and they have proven just that quite recently.
