San Diego Padres edge past Seattle Mariners 5-4 – MLB Recap
The San Diego Padres edge past the Seattle Mariners 5-4 in the first game of their three-match regular series encounter on Tuesday, June 12 at Safeco Field in 2012 Major League Baseball season.
San Diego side played tremendously and never allowed the Mariners to take control of the game at any stage of play. The entire roster remained calm and played with aggressive mind.
From start of the game, the Padres took control of the game and started a quick run towards total shattering of Mariners’ offence.
The game at one point looked one sided affair but the Mariners did surprise the Padres in the ninth with their quick three runs but on the whole, the game was dominated by San Diego and eventually won it in style as well.
Starter Clayton Richard played well for the Padres as he tossed seven innings and gave only one run.
"Tonight, he matched up with one of the best pitchers in the American League and outpitched him, I liked the matchup with him and Saunders; Joe's been great against lefties, I wanted to get Figgins on the other side. Tonight, it didn't work out. But Huston
came in and got it done." Padres’ manager Bud Black said of Richard whose performance gave San Diego real chance to bounce back in the competition.
Later Mariners manager Eric Wedge said on his team’s poor effort, “I felt like we were sluggish defensively, we didn't give Felix much help that inning. We've got a series of moves that we're going to be making (Wednesday),"
On the other hand, the Mariners’ starter Felix Hernandez could not play well as he received nine hits and allowed five runs in his six innings’ spell. His pitching was not accurate as he gave too much waivered deliveries in his last two innings and smashed
for some heavy hits.
In the meanwhile, this win now gives the San Diego side a quite good chance to make things little better. At the moment they are not in good position of sitting at bottom of the National League West with 20-41 along with .328 winning percentage.
