San Diego Padres exercise option on manager Bud Black - MLB News
The San Diego Padres exercised their club option on their manager Bud Black for 2014 and 2015. The manager is under contract until 2013, under a three year extension given to him in 2010 by the club.
He has so far managed the Padres in six seasons, the second longest managerial stint for any manager with the ball club. The longest time the position was held is by Bruce Bochy, who held it for 12 seasons from 1995 to 2006.
Bud was excited at the prospect of continuing with the San Diego Padres and aimed at winning a championship for the team.
Black said, "I am extremely proud to be part of this organisation, and I'm excited to continue working with ownership and our baseball operations team toward achieving our ultimate goal: bringing a championship to the great city and fans of San Diego."
During his six season long stint, Black has so far had two winning seasons with the ball club. He was named the Writers’ Association National League Manager of the Year in 2010, a year where he won 90 games and missed a post-season berth by just a single
game.
He so far has a 464-509 record for the San Diego Franchise. Bud’s team had a 76-86 record in 2012. However, in the lateral half of the season, the team bounced back and won 49 of the last 86 games, posting a .570 winning percentage.
Josh Byrnes, the general manager of the Padres was all praise for the insight Bud has in the game and for his leadership skills.
"Buddy has a keen insight into team dynamics and creates a great environment for the players and coaching staff," Josh Said. "He is a gifted leader with a terrific mind for the game."
During Bud’s tenure as manager, Josh Byrnes is the third general manager. When he was hired, Kevin Towers was the general manager, who now holds the same position in the Arizona Diamondbacks. He also served under the current Chicago Cubs general manager,
Jed Hoyer during his stint in San Diego.
Bud Black also showed his gratitude to the owners and general manager of the ball club for keeping faith in him and his players and staff. "I am honored and humbled by the faith Josh and our ownership team have shown in me, the coaching staff and our players,"
he said.
Padres remain the only team that Bud has managed in the Major League. The 55-year-old had a five year association with Anaheim Angeles as a pitching coach. He had a fulfilling career as a pitcher, playing the Major Leagues for 15 seasons and has a World
Series Championship under his belt as well.
The San Diego Padres have indeed made a positive move by showing their faith in Bud Black. The manager will move into the coming season knowing that the team’s management is behind him and should have plenty of confidence to repeat the great performance
shown by the team towards the end of the season in 2012.
