San Diego Padres’ general manager Josh Byrnes concerned with guns use- MLB News
The San Diego Padres lost one of their main pitchers Andrew Cashner to a hunting accident in which he suffered from a lacerated tendon on his right thumb and will be out of the game for six months after a surgery on the thumb.
The situation does not sit well with the general manager of the Padres, Josh Byrnes who believes that athletes have to be careful with their hobbies such as hunting.
Josh is concerned about the off field behaviour of the players, something that the club cannot control and hopes that they will be responsible and make the right calls.
"As a GM, I am concerned,'' Byrnes said."You're dealing with young guys, and obviously, we can control things on the job, but away from it, we hope they make the right decisions.''
He also expressed his concerns about the liking of guns players had. "I don't know if athletes are predisposed to guns or not, but it's certainly something that concerns you,'' he added.
There certainly is need to use more caution and show more responsibility on part of those who indulge in such outdoor activities. This was a second hunting related incident in a week’s time.
Chicago Cubs’ manager, Dale Sveum was shot in the ear while quail hunting by a friend early on. It is strange to have to such incidents within a week’s time, both related with hunting.
Frank Wren, the current Atlanta Braves coach, sees the situation in a different light. In his 25-year-long career in the Majors, he has been a part of many franchises and believes that being around guns or going hunting has no issues attached to it and mostly
the hunters know how to handles themselves whiles they are at it.
"What's different is that the hunting culture for the most part are the most gun-savvy and the most careful and cautious of any group of gun owners," says Wren. "And we're also not talking about handguns. That's a whole other class that we don't see."
The hunting accident though will carry a price for Andrew as he was expected to be a part of the San Diego’s opening rotation. Now with the injury, the earliest he can make a return to competitive baseball is sometime in May or June.
Baseball players are known for their fondness of outdoor sports such as hunting during the off season. Pursuing ones hobbies is a good thing, but there is a need to exercise caution particularly when small mistakes can take a big toll.
Thankfully in both the recent accidents, there was no serious damage caused and the incidents would probably be not taken in a very serious light. However, this should serve as a wakeup call to those who are not careful while they have their adventures in
the outdoors.
