San Diego Padres humiliate Pittsburgh Pirates 15-5 – MLB Update
Chase Headley hit a grand slam on Friday, August 5 to help the San Diego Padres rout the Pittsburgh Pirates 15-5 at PNC Park.
The Padres victory also marked the eighth straight loss of the Pittsburgh Pirates, a team that continues to reel, finding itself unable to keep pace with other teams in the second half of the season.
Friday’s game main highlight was the six-run fourth inning that put the Pirates in double jeopardy, a score that was more than the total run the Pirates made. It was the fourth inning that the Pirates could not recover from up until the end.
The game kicked off with Neil Walker’s RBI single against the Padres’ starter Aaron Harang. The start seemed favourable for the Pirates which then capitalised on another slow pitch. Ryan Ludwick singled to left centre to double the lead for the Pirates.
However, before the Pirates could go ahead with the lead, the Padres’ offence sparked and quickly came up with hits that levelled the score. Will Venable scored an RBI single and Luis Martinez went for another big hit to tie the score.
Ronny Cedeno scored a single in the second inning to give the Pirates a 3-2 edge, but it did not last long as Chase Headley hit an RBI single to level the score once again in the third inning. Ryan Doumit hit another single in the bottom of third to again
put the Pirates on the leading 4-3 position.
However, everything seemed to spell calamity for the Pirates in the fourth inning when Jeff Karstens came to pitch. Luis Martinez was the first one to score a single to level the score and then Jason Bartlett hit another RBI single to take the lead to 5-4.
Before Karstens could recover from the shock of giving up two runs, Chase Headley struck the most remarkable hit of the night, a grand slam that gave the Padres an ultimate 9-4 lead in the game.
After the 5-hit sixth-run fourth inning, the Padres did not look back and kept piling up runs to keep the Pirates under pressure. Kyle Blanks scored a single in the fifth against Tony Watson to make it 10-4, while Joe Thatcher pitched a shut-out sixth for
the Padres.
Will Venable scored a single in the seventh followed by Luis Martinez and Aaron Cunningham that took the lead to 13-4 and Jesus Guzman hit a two-run homer in the eighth for the Padres after Garret Jones had a single for the Pirates in the seventh, making
the score 15-5.
Ernesto Frieri pitched a shut-out ninth inning as a closer to wrap up the game with a 15-5 victory for the San Diego Padres against the straining Pittsburgh Pirates.
