San Diego Padres humiliate St. Louis Cardinals 11-3 as Chris Denorfia leads offence - MLB Update
Left fielder Chris Denorfia spearheads the San Diego Padres’ offensive as they rout the St. Louis Cardinals 11-3 at Petco Park, San Diego, California on September 10, 2012 in the first game of the three match series.
Padres experienced a flurry of high scoring innings throughout the match. In the first four innings, they added six runs. From the very beginning they took their lead to a level from where blowing it was not easy for the opposition.
When the Padres posted five more runs in two innings later on, it was nearly impossible for the Cardinals to bounce back.
Offensively it was arguably the best game for the Padres in the season as they struck 17 hits in it.
Denorfia hammered four hits in six at-bats while he contributed two RBIs. Their centre fielder Cameron Maybin smacked a home-run on Monday. He was 3-for-4.
As far as the pitchers were concerned, Eric Stults gave up three runs as a starter in little more than five innings. He earned the win as he did not let the Cardinals go past the Padres.
Other than the starter, Padres’ relievers were extremely impressive on the mound. They all were scoreless in the match.
San Diego’s manager Bud Black enjoys the way his batters put Cardinals’ starter Jaime Garcia under pressure. Right in the first inning Garcia had to face a bases-loaded scenario. While he managed to escape it, for the manager it was great to watch him struggling.
"I liked the fact we had Garcia on the ropes in the first, even though he wiggled out of it," Bud Black said. "We kept putting the pressure on him and we had a lot of big, two-out hits.”
The pressure that the Padres built on the opposition in the first inning was used to keep scoring runs against them throughout the match.
Winning the first game of the series is always good for the team’s morale.
The Padres will be looking to keep the momentum going and end up clinching the series victory. It will be interesting to see as to what extent they can be successful in this regard.
