San Diego Padres in talks with veteran starting pitcher Edwin Jackson- MLB News
The San Diego Padres are said to be in talks with right-handed pitcher Edwin Jackson. There is currently no word if a deal between the Padres and Edwin is on the cards or not.
It has been rumoured that negotiations for a three-year deal are underway. Edwin is an experienced pitcher Majors and has been part of the game at the highest level since 2003. During the 9-year period, he has represented seven different ball clubs.
The pitcher, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2001 in the sixth round, was a part of the Washington Nationals in 2012 as a part of a one-year deal with the ball club.
Edwin has a 70-71 win-loss career record with an ERA of 4.40. His best year so far in the career has been 2008 where he posted a 14-11 winning record with a 4.42 ERA in 32 games, 31 of them as a starting pitcher.
A number of teams have shown interest in Jackson this off-season. Currently Texas Rangers are said to be another team that has serious interest in Edwin a part from the San Diego ball club. Minnesota Twins, Los Angeles Angels, Toronto Blue Jays and Milwaukee
Brewers have also shown interest in the 29-year-old at some point in time this off-season.
It is suggested that in case of a deal, the average salary should be around $12-13 million per year. Edwin last year signed a one-year deal with the Washington Nationals for $11 million dollars and had moderate success with the Washington ball club.
Edwin would himself not mind coming to play for the San Diego Padres as the Petco Field, the home of the ball club, is traditionally a pitcher friendly ball park. It would be a good opportunity to get some numbers in.
The Padres have previously said quite clearly that they are looking for some more pitchers to add to their pitching unit. However, they are also aware of the fact that with big names taken away quickly, the expected prices of relatively lesser names would
also be higher than normal.
Some quarters have suggested that if the deal seeked by Edwin is for four to five years, the San Diego ball club may drop out of the race for the pitcher.
Edwin Jackson is an experienced pitcher with plenty of experience in the Major League. It would be a good signing for the Padres if he comes on board and should strengthen the pitching unit.
The Padres would certainly like to bag Edwin, however, the eventual deal may come down to the terms of the contract and if Jackson is seeking a deal longer than three seasons, we may not be seeing him in Padres’ colours next season.
