San Diego Padres keep Jerry Sullivan, Jonathan Galvez, lose Nate Freiman in Rule 5 Draft- MLB News
The San Diego Padres were not in the mood of selecting players via Rule 5 draft. Instead, they were hoping that some of their players available for selection would be given a miss by the other teams and that did happen.
The one they lost was Nate Freiman, the first baseman who enjoyed reasonable success in the Padres’ Minor League System and at the Arizona Fall League. Randy Smith, Padres’ vice president for development and international scouting said that the club had
an idea that Nate may draw some interest, although the Padres were hoping it would not be happening.
"We figured there was a strong chance that someone might take him," said Randy. "He's had success during his Minor League career. Selfishly, we'd like to see him come back to us."
Houston Astros, his new team, must keep him on the 25-man roster throughout the 2013 season. If that does not happen, they will have to offer him back to the Padres for $25,000.
Padres’ Jerry Sullivan got a miss in the draft. The right-handed pitcher was drafted by the ball club in the 2009 draft’s third round out of Oral Roberts University. The 24-year-old had a bit of struggle playing for the Class-A Lake Elsinore in the early
part of the season where he posted 6.28 ERA with a 1-3 losing record. He did manage to finish better, posting a 3-2 winning record with a 2.32 ERA in the latter part of the season.
Infielder Jonathan Galvez was also expected to be selected during the draft but that did not happen. Galvez has been with the franchise for five seasons. He has so far had a .281 career average in the Minors and a decent .375 on-base percentage.
The 21-year-old posted a .292 batting average and a .364 on-base percentage in the 82 games of the 2012 season for Double-A San Antonio Missions. He is expected to be playing for the Triple-A Tucson Padres in the 2013 season.
The Padres did select a couple of players from the Minor League Draft including infielder Diego Goris and pitcher Federico Castaneda, both from the Kansas City Royals.
San Diego Padres, on the other hand, lost Sawyer Carroll to the Toronto Blue Jays in the Minor League phase. The 26-year-old played for the Padres’ Triple-A affiliate Tucson Padres in 2012 and posted a .263 batting average with a .337 on-base percentage.
Sawyer was associated with the Padres since 2008.
The San Diego ball club will be happy at the moment as they did not lose some of their future prospects. Although they did not pick any one in the Major League part of the Rule 5, they did add a couple of Minors Leaguers. One can hope that these players
can serve the Padres well and at some point be a part of their Major League plans.
