San Diego Padres lose to Arizona Diamondbacks 5-6 in close battle at Chase Field – MLB news
San Diego Padres made a strong recovery against the Arizona Diamondbacks but still lost 6-5 on Sunday, May 26, 2013 at the Chase Field.
The loss leaves the Padres with a 22-27 win-loss record but they have plenty of lessons to take home from this game.
The Padres took the lead in the first innings when Chase Headley got a groundout RBI. However, two runs each in the bottom of the first and the second saw the home team take a strong 4-1 lead.
The San Diego ballclub made a recovery and Kyle Blanks was able to cut some of the deficit with an RBI single in the fourth. Carlos Quentin went long with Everth Cabrera on the first base to tie the game.
Bud Black, the manager for the Padres, was all praise for Carlos Quentin who appears to be in supreme form at the moment. The manager felt that Carlos is doing everything right and has recovered from the period where he was not seeing the ball well and was
not connecting.
“He's standing a little taller and he's seeing the ball better,” Black said. “Like all good hitters will tell you, they need to see the ball and there was a period of time where 'Q' was not seeing the ball as well as he wanted to. There are periods over
a six-month season where you are not seeing it as well as other times.”
The D-Backs were able to add two more runs by the end of the seventh innings. Kyle Blanks was able to drive in a run on a double to cut the lead to a single run. However, the Padres were unable to score again, allowing victory to the Arizona ballclub.
Jason Marquis, the opening pitcher for the Padres in the game was clearly off colour and gave away four runs in a little over three innings. His five game winning streak was snapped and he was unable to record a quality start.
The manager felt that although the pitcher has done well generally, he was not having his best day. Going to the bullpen early appeared to be the best idea.
“There were a couple of times where he did a nice job but overall, he was just a little uncomfortable the entire day. It was one of those things where I felt we needed to go to the bullpen in the early part of the game,” Black said.
Patrick Corbin, meanwhile had his eighth victory of the season and maintains a perfect 8-0 winning record. He allowed four runs in six innings, three of them earned to restrict the Padres.
The San Diego Padres have done reasonably well off late but have not found as much success. It is important that they get their act together and convert these near misses into wins.
