San Diego Padres lose to Cincinnati Reds 2-4 – MLB Update
The San Diego Padres lost to Cincinnati Reds 2-4 in the final and fourth game of their four-match regular series encounter on Sunday, July 8 at Petco Park, San Diego.
San Diego did not play their natural game and could not match the Reds brilliance who also managed to win the series 3-1.
Jay Bruce and Ryan Ludwick proved a winning combination for the Reds as they comprehensively ousted the Padres.
Right-fielder Jay Bruce scored a single run with two BRIs and Ludwick also made healthy contribution with his one hit run along with an RBI.
“We really needed these games after the LA series where we lost two of three, This is a new year, I feel like I'm hitting the ball a little bit differently. I think everyone knows that I kind of got pulled down a bit when I was here. I'm hitting the ball
better now." Ludwick said.
"We needed it big time, We needed it to keep up to where we were." Reds’ manager Dusty Baker said.
Johnny Cueto on one end proved wonderful for the Reds while the Cincinnati batters also supported their team with exceptional hitting.
Cueto pitched five innings and received two runs on seven hits while he also gave two earned runs. Striking-out five batters, Cueto’s ERA also remained consistent at 2.39.
Jason Marquis on the other hand, could not play well for the Padres. He tossed five innings and gave three runs on seven hits. Striking-out only five batters, the Padres’ starter also hit for two homers as his ERA rose to 3.71.
Centre-fielder Cameron Maybin was the only Padres batter who played relatively better then his other team-mates with his consistent slugging percentage of .309.
"I was just positioned in the right spot, I got a good jump and saw where the wall was. It's been kind of an up-and-down first half,” Maybin said on particular performance.
Meanwhile, San Diego is currently standing at fourth position in the National League West and these three straight defeats from the Reds’ have further slipped their chance in the race towards post season qualification.
