San Diego Padres lose to Washington Nationals 6-2 at Petco Park amid silent bats - MLB News
San Diego Padres were unable to produce the required firepower and lost their series opener against the Washington Nationals 6-2 in the Petco Park on Thursday, May 16, 2013. The series will have four games in
all.
The start of the game was rather sedate as none of the teams was able to get on the score board in the first three innings. Adam LaRoche got things underway for the Nationals with a two-run home in the bottom
of the fourth innings.
The Washington ballclub was able to improve the grip on the game further in the next innings and added three more runs to the tally. Steve Lombardozzi got an RBI single and Ryan Zimmerman got a two-run RBI single.
The Padres were able to dent the lead a little in the bottom of the fifth innings when they got their first run. They added another in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice fly by Chris Denorfia.
Bryce Harper homered to the centre field in the top of the seventh to take the lead to 6-2. The score line remained the same for the rest of the game with the visitors coming out on top.
One of the concerning factors for the Padres was that they could only muster four hits in home conditions. Chase Headley was the only prominent name who was able to connect well twice, getting a single and a
double, but could not create an impact on the scoreboard due to lack of support from his teammates.
Starting pitcher, Edinson Volquez, recorded his fourth loss of the season and is currently standing at a 3-4 win-loss record this year. He surrendered five hits and an equal number of runs in the five innings
that he pitched in.
The Padres currently stand fourth in the National League West with an 18-22 record. Their season has been thus far been a bit of hit and miss. The team enjoyed a purple patch in the latter half of 2012 season
and much is expected of them this season.
The fans would certainly be hoping that the team can shrug off the defeat and pick up the pace from where they left it in Baltimore.
