San Diego Padres manager Bud Black talks about on job extension, communication- MLB News
The San Diego Padres recently exercised their club option on Manager Bud Black for 2013-14. The San Diego ball club made a remarkable turnaround in the lateral part of the season, producing a 49-37 winning record after the All-Star break.
The manger himself has been working hard for the team and the performance in 2012 shows that. He has, however, not been able to achieve as much as he would have liked to. He has a 464-509 record as a Padres manager since 2007 when he joined the team in his
current capacity.
He has had two winning seasons so far in 2007 and 2010 and on both occasions, they missed a ticket to the post-season on the final day of the regular season.
The manager himself, who grew up in San Diego is pleased with the ball club maintaining him as a part of them. Josh Byrnes, the general manager of the Padres, brought up the matter to him at latter stages of the season and it all happened in a quick motion.
‘’I know Josh mentioned it to me at the latter stages of the season,’’ he said in a recent interview to MLB.com. ‘’ At some point he came back to me and said everything was good as far as everybody being on board. ‘’
When inquired if the decision was taken during the season and announced later, he said that an understanding was developed. The process took its due course and unfolded as the time went by.
‘’It was verbally. It wasn't like one day they said they were going to pick up my options, and the next day it was announced. Josh knew. Ownership knew. I knew. Some people in baseball ops knew,’’ he said in the interview to MLB.com.
When inquired about what was needed as a modern day manager, Bud had his emphasis on communication with the players. He said that it is crucial that the expectations from a given player are clear and he is aware of what his goals are.
He believes that the whole matter works well when there is a clear contact on both sides. The crux is the communication is absolutely vital for every aspect of a player and manager relationship.
‘’For me, it has been the continued effort to engage the players, to understand that component of the relationship between player and manager. In this day and age, more than anything, that's vital,’’ Black said in the interview.
Bud Black is a good manager and the Padres made a wise decision in persevering with him for another two years. If the Padres can perform as well as it did after the All-Star break in 2012, there is no reason that why Bud Black’s team will not be serious
contenders for a championship trophy.
