San Diego Padres out-fielder Carlos Quentin may get contract extension – MLB News
The San Diego Padres have recently acquired out-fielder Carlos Quentin from the Chicago White Sox in order to strengthen their 40-man roster for the next Major League season.
Many say this late acquisition of Padres will help the organisation for a long period of time. However, recent reports regarding Quentin and his potential chance of becoming a free agent at the end of 2012 season has sparked some questions in the media and
placed the Padres’ management at little difficulty.
Either the Padres’ management will extend his contract for the potential loss of a good player or he might opt for free agency and come with another new contract. However, these speculations are now somewhat looking possible as the Padres’ general manager
Josh Byrnes stated in the media about Quentin’s future.
Byrnes said, “We don’t have any commitments to 2013 and beyond, but we do have choices and decisions to make. Our payroll model is setting up well. We’re not in total go-for-it mode, but we can make some choices. We acquired Carlos with the thought that
we could extend him.”
Josh added, “We want to win as soon as possible for as long as possible. We have decisions to make during 2012. I think we have a chance in 2012.”
Despite the GM’s praise, Quentin is certainly a good player having a hitting average of .254 along with 24 home-runs, 77 RBIs and .340 OBP. While his career hitting average of .252 along with 121 homers, 383 RBIs and .346 OBP also makes him a dynamic player
at this position.
Looking at his stats, certainly the Padres’ top management will extend his existing contract for a few more years.
Quentin and his agent are still silent on this late speculation and did not say anything but inside sources are reporting that both will appreciate if the Padres extends Quentin’s contract.
On the other hand, Quentin is excited to start his career with a new team and looking forward to see his game improve before the start of the 2012 MLB regular season.
