San Diego Padres overcame the Miami Marlins 3-2 in the 10th innings at the Petco Park on Wednesday, May 29, 2013.
It was a sedate game that was decided by an RBI single by Will Venable in the bottom of the extra innings.
The scoring got underway courtesy a solo home-run by Chase Headley in the bottom of the first innings. The Marlins got their first run in the fourth to tie the score.
The game continued without much action and most of the innings in between were three in three out. It was certainly a day marked with strong defence from both sides.
Jason Bay homered in the top of the ninth to left field to put the Marlins in front. The Padres were able to hold ground with the help of a sacrifice fly by Kyle Blanks as Will Venable was able to reach the home plate.
Will Venable’s heroics got his team home in the 10th innings. It was the third career walk-off hit for the Venable.
Will was down to earth about his effort and felt that he had gotten a pitch that was hittable and went to a spot where a play could not be made.
“I was really comfortable up there,” Venable said. “I got a decent pitch to hit and was able to find a spot where they couldn't make a play. It's nice to win one like that. It shows great resolve all around.”
The efforts of the starting pitcher Eric Stults were also crucial as he allowed only a single run and three hits with a career high 12 strike outs in eight innings.
Padres’ manager Bud Black was pleased by the performance and said that he is was not sure if better pitching than that can be done.
“He's pitched some very good games for us ... but I don't know how you throw any better than that,” Padres manager Bud Black said. “That's impressive.”
The game was a much tighter contest between the two teams who had won a single game a piece at the Safeco Field with big margins. It was certainly a lot of entertainment for the fans on both sides.
