San Diego Padres’ pitcher Andrew Cashner injures thumb, to start 2013 on disabled list - MLB News
San Diego Padres’ relief pitcher Andrew Cashner will most likely be entering the 2013 season on the disabled list as he suffers from a lacerated tendon in his right thumb. Andrew has already had surgery on his thumbs and doctors suggest that it will take
a period of three months for the thumb to recover from the injury.
Josh Byrnes shed some light on the incident explaining the love for the outdoors that Cashner has, probably led to the injury. He was trimming carcass for preserving meat along with a friend. He got a cut that caused a puncture wound while dressing meat.
Andrew is expected to make a full recovery and the injury should not cause him any harm in the longer run once he recovers. "The doctor didn't expect any long-term consequences," Byrnes said.
The San Diego Padres currently have eight potential rotation options and will be having a tough time with Cashner on disabled list along with Joe Wieland and Cory Luebke. Andrew was a strong candidate to be a part of the opening rotation at the start of
2013 season but those plans will have to take a back seat for now.
The ball club understands that the situation is far from ideal and they will be facing a challenge early next season in pitching. "That's not Plan A, but those guys will be back at some point," Byrnes said.
Josh quite clearly said it will be unwise to think that Andrew can make it to the team on the opening day of the regular season. "To say he'll be ready by Opening Day is not realistic," he said.
Andrew Cashner played for the Padres in the 2012 season. He was previously associated with the Chicago Cubs for two seasons. The native of Conroe, Texas posted a 3-4 win-loss record in 2012. His ERA was 4.28 and WHIP of 1.37. Cashner is primarily a reliever
and has played as a starting pitcher only in six of his 93 Major League games.
The 26-year-old was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the first round of 2008 draft out of the Texas Christian University. He had some strong performances in the farm system of the cubs. In 2010, he was named as the fourth top prospect for the Cubs by Baseball
America.
Cashner took the role of the eighth innings specialist before moving to the rotation but a strain took him out of the game in early July, placing him on the disabled list. He did make a return in September only to sit out again due to aggravation of the
same injury.
Andrew Cashner is a talented pitcher but for him to grow in the Major League, he will be looking to make sure that he remains fit. The San Diego Padres are certainly looking forward to having him on their rotation in 2013 and it is an opportunity he must
make full use of.
