San Diego Padres rally to overwhelm San Francisco Giants 5-3 – MLB Update
The San Diego Padres did not let the San Francisco Giants came out of their struggling form, as the Padres overpowered the defending World Series champions 5-3 for their back-to-back triumph of the four-game series at AT&T Park in San Francisco on Tuesday,
July 5.
The Giants were looking to attain their momentum back as their batters Brandon Crawford and Aaron Rowand each drove in an RBI single to post a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning. However, the Padres did not let them enjoy this lead even for
a single inning and blistered game-tying two runs in the top of the second inning. Centre-fielder Cameron Maybin and Anthony Rizzo each added an RBI single to accumulate two runs.
After a stay of one inning, the Giants’ pitcher Matt Cain drove in single with a bat and elevated his team to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning. He defended his own lead with swinging pitches at the bottom of the fourth and fifth. In the sixth inning
though, he failed to maintain his impetus and gave away three runs to allow the Padres to take a 5-3 lead.
This time again Maybin and Rizzo made contributions to elevate their team into a leading position. Maybin made an RBI double while Rizzo added a line drive single. Their runs cost Cain five on seven hits over seven innings. He also got six strike-outs but
it was not enough to escape him from fifth loss of the season.
The Padres’ starter Tim Stauffer, on the other hand despite allowing two runs in the first and one run in the fourth enjoyed his fifth win of the season. He went six innings, allowed eight hits, walked one and struck-out one on 104 pitches. It not only improved
his win-loss record to 5-5 but also his ERA to 2.97 after 18 starts.
Last year, Padres were eliminated from play-off contention at this Park but this time manager Bud Black is in a different mode. Bud said, "Every game is different, but this is nothing new to Padres-Giants games."
His relievers Chad Qualls, Mike Adams and closer Heath Bell also combined to toss shut-out seventh, eighth and ninth inning.
The Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy, in contrast was not a happy skipper, as he said, “To be honest, it's frustrating. I think you can look at how much trouble we are having getting guys in. It is always frustrating for a line-up."
After receiving third-straight loss, Bochy now has connected all his hopes to Madison Bumgarner, who has gained tremendous wins in his last two games.
