San Diego Padres reel in Cameron Maybin for two relievers
Major League Baseball is currently going through the off season period and with the pressure off teams to perform on field, the General Managers are now being called in to accommodate the free agents’ market that has been buzzing, ever since the San Francisco
Giants walked away with the World Series title. The time to play the game on the ground is over and ball clubs are looking to build on their current weaknesses. The task is tough but through perseverance and dedication, there is a chance that any team in both
the National and the American League could win the ultimate trophy in 2011.
The San Diego Padres were unlucky last season as they lost out to the Giants in the pursuit of the spot in the playoffs. They were leading the table during most of the season but faltered to capitalize on their position in the long run.
Now with the offseason here, the Padres have moved on one of the vital key positions in their lineup by reinforcing it with Florida Marlins, outfielder, Cameron Maybin. The player who was a former top prospect in the country and was a first round draft pick
has done a lot in the last season. The batter averaged .246 with the bat and smashed 13 homers during the last campaign. In further view, he drove in 45 runs.
However Ryan Webb and Edward Mujica were traded for the outfielder. The two relief pitchers were important in the Padres line up last year.
General Manager of the Padres, Jed Hoyer was available for a comment and he said, "We traded two good relievers from our bullpen. But we feel like we have some bullpen depth. We have a number of holes we need to fill. We feel like we filled one of them.
Any time you have a chance to fill a hole up the middle, you take that chance."
He further went on to say, "We want him to come in here and feel secure he's going to play center field for us. I'm confident of where he's going to play in the field. He has the skill set, he has power and can steal bases. His career path was unusual. He
was up in the big leagues at 20, part of a major trade. I think he's a guy who didn't have a normal path. We think letting him play every day here will help him realize his potential."
