San Diego Padres shutout Milwaukee Brewers 1-0 to tie the series - MLB Update
Orlando Hudson hit a decisive single in the ninth inning to take San Diego Padres to 1-0 series-tying triumph over the Milwaukee Brewers, at the Petco Park, on Thursday, May 19.
The game was scoreless until the ninth inning when Hudson entered the plate for his third at-bat and chipped a sacrifice fly off the Brewers’ closer Marco Estrada for a game winning run.
Estrada was struggling right from his first pitch, as he gave the Padres’ Ryan Ludwick a single, allowing Eric Patterson to steal second base and then gave an intentional walk to Brad Hawpe. Estrada gave his first sacrifice fly to Cameron Maybin, who provided
Patterson a chance to move on third base.
Patterson was on third base and Hawpe was on second when Estrada gave away a defeat-earning run to Hudson.
"I didn't want to fall behind and I wanted to throw the change-up real low," Estrada said. "If I threw it more away, I would have had a ground ball. I got too much of the plate and he hit it deep enough to score the guy."
The San Diego’s manager Bud Blake said, "That's how you score a run to win a game. Orlando brings a presence of experience, calmness and plays the game with energy," Black further added. "That is infectious."
Before this run, the game was completely in the hands of the pitchers. Padres’ starter Aaron Harang remained scoreless despite allowing six hits and two walks, made four strike-outs over his eight innings to take his team into strong position. Harang tossed
69 strikes of 98 pitches secure his record to 5-2 with a 4.31 ERA.
"The slider was really working," Harang said. "The more I could throw it for strikes, it made my fastball that much more effective."
The Padres’ reliever Heath Bell provided an ideal back up to Harang and tossed a scoreless last inning to cement his club’s strong position in the game.
The Brewers’ starter, Chris Narveson also had outstanding pitches to hold the Padres scoreless in his seven innings spell. Narveson gave away just four hits and one walk while managed four strike-outs to bear his third loss with 3.44 ERA.
Reliever Kameron Loe followed the same impressive path set by the Narveson and did not yield any run over his inning spell, however still remained helpless to take the game back into the Padres side.
