San Diego Padres sign nine of their eleven arbitration eligible players – MLB News
To avoid any unpleasant situation in the near future, the San Diego Padres have signed nine of their eleven arbitration eligible players spending approximately $22 million to secure a somewhat smooth 2012 Major League season.
Padres agreed to sign Carlos Quentin including Will Venable, Nick Hundley, John Baker, Tim Stauffer, Edinson Volquez, Chase Headley, Luke Gregerson and Joe Thatcher leaving only two players Clayton Richard and Dustin Moseley.
These two are still on arbitration and will be appearing before the MLB panel in the next month for their salaries negations. Both these players and their agents did not agree as what the Padres initially offered them.
After signing these nine important players, the Padres' general manager Josh Byrnes told the media explaining in detail about how significant this step is.
Byrnes said, “We had an all-hands-on-deck approach today. We were in very early today and things happened in a rapid-fire approach. Things start happening as soon as someone at a position goes first. The last day is always hectic and we need to involve in matters, this being more hectic than most because we had so many players eligible for arbitration negotiations. I was hopeful we’d get the majority of those contracts which arbitration completed today and although I had no idea how many.”
Quentin, who is coming from the Chicago White Sox, was given some hefty money of just over $7 million. His deal is currently ranked second in the Padres roster behind closer Huston Street's $7.5 million.
Headley will be making just over $3 million in next season while his $1.15 million raise is certainly stands at one of the highest salary raises in the Padres 40-man roster. Stauffer’s $3.2 million also shows a raise of just over $2 million over his 2011 salary. However, Volquez will be making $2.23 million along with Hundley $2 million, Venable $1.47 million, Gregerson $1.55 million, Baker $750,000 and Thatcher $700,000.
Other details regarding incentives and bonuses are still pending and are to be released to the public. However, experts believe, these recent drastic steps by the Padres' management will be paying them back with huge benefit in the coming season.
