San Diego Padres succumb to Colorado Rockies 6-8 – MLB Recap
The San Diego Padres lost to the Colorado Rockies 6-8 in the second game of their three-match regular series encounter on Saturday, July 21 at Petco Park in San Diego.
Overall the game was played at a high pace as both teams scored early but still the Rockies remained calm until the last inning play and eventually won in the end.
Their pitchers and hitters showed extraordinary commitment to their given task and came out from Petco Field victorious.
After losing the first game of the series 9-5, the Rockies have bounced back in style and now levelled the three-match encounter 1-1.
Rockies upfront pitchers however, did not play well but later in the game, the relief and closing pitchers certainly saved the game for them.
Padres’ manager Bud Black commented on his team’s performance and said, "Off the bat I thought no, As it was coming down I thought yes. And as it ended up ... it was no."
Starter Jeff Francis was hammered with five runs on eight hits as he struck-out five but his ERA rose to 5.24.
Later relief pitcher Matt Belisle showed some determination and gave only one run on four hits. He pitched two innings as his ERA remained consistent at 2.29.
On the other hand, the Padres’ pitchers performed certainly with low energy and gave too many loop-holes to the Rockies’ hitters.
Starter Kip Wells tossed 4.2 innings and was hammered with six runs on eight hits. He gave five earned runs and his ERA rose to 4.00.
“We battled ... everybody else in the bullpen did well, I just didn't get the job done tonight," Thatcher said. "I was throwing strikes, was one out away. One of those hits could just have easily been right at [shortstop Everth Cabrera] and we'd keep playing."
The real damaged came from closer Joe Thatcher, who gave two crucial runs in the last innings. He also gave two earned runs on three hits which eventually proved not good for the Padres as they lost with a two-run deficit.
Colorado will be happy with their performance as they managed to get their offence going and get in a good victory over the Padres.
