San Diego Padres sweep San Francisco Giants beating them 6-4 in series finale at Petco Park
The San Diego Padres defeated the San Francisco Giants 6-4 at Petco Park on Sunday, April 28, 2013 by a margin of 3-0.
This was the fifth series out of the eight that the Padres have played which ended up with a clean sweep. Padres have been swept three times whereas they have handed it to others on two occasions now.
Padres’ manager Bud Black has no explanation to the phenomenon where winning or losing the first game seems to seal the fate of the series. He said that he cannot find any way to predict the outcomes of even a week of play.
"You can't explain it," said Black. "I wish that I could. You never know how a month is going to play out, let alone a week."
It was a good game for the home team as they maintained their grip on the match from the start. They got ahead in the first innings and at no point could the Giants come to equal terms at an end of the innings.
Jason Marquis picked up his second win of the season. In his nearly seven innings pitching stint, he gave away just two runs with six hits and four walks. He did get into situations where there were base runners in place in the first four innings but was
able to contain any major damage.
Chase Headley leaped back into a bit of form after he got three hits in the game. His batting average shot up from .182 to .250 within a space of a single game. His two doubles and a second home-run for the season certainly helped the team’s cause.
He felt that he swung well and was pleased that everyone was getting some good at-bats in the team.
"Just good swings," Headley said. "The guys are having good at-bats. It's great to see guys hit some home runs."
The third baseman had some tough times earlier and was frustrated with the lack of form that he had. He did not give up and got his lost touch back.
"It's been frustrating -- the last few days I was having good swings and good at-bats and not getting the results," Chase said. "But you keep grinding away at it and today I got the results."
The Padres are certainly looking to turn things around. The start of the season was certainly nothing nearly spectacular and the team coming into this season had a 6-15 losing record. They have now improved it to 9-15 but there is still a long way to go.
Should they be able to turn it around like they did after the All-Star break last year, they can certainly be a force to reckon with.
