San Diego Padres thrash the Chicago Cubs 7-4 – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs on Tuesday, August 7 lost their seventh consecutive game as the San Diego Padres beat them 7-4 at Petco Park, San Diego. The Cubs failed both offensively and defensively as the Padres went on a rampage.
Brooks Raley who was making his debut was subject to big hits by the San Diego batters. But in particular, it was Carlos Quentin whose three-run homer in the fourth inning shattered any hope of the Cubs to make a comeback in the game.
"He's dangerous every time he steps to the plate," San Diego Padres' manager Bud Black said. "He's a proven offensive player. When he's in there, he's an offensive weapon."
Brooks who had come to replace the starter Matt Garza could not hold the Padres' hitters. While the first two innings were good enough, Brooks gave up a two-run single when Chase Headley scored, giving the team 2-0 lead.
It was then Everth Cabrera who also drove in two runs in the same inning, taking the lead to 4-0 for the Padres. Then came Quentin who hit his 12th homer of the season, leaving the Cubs in disarray as the Padres lead went to 7-0.
"Chase has always been a consistent player," Black said. "He can only improve when he's surrounded by players like Carlos."
The Cubs' hitters tried to stage a comeback from the fifth inning onwards when both Darwin Barney and Luis Valbuena scored two-out doubles in the fifth to bring the Padres lead down to 7-1.
Steve Clevenger hit a single against Brad Boxberger and then Josh Vitters hit a two-run double to make it 7-4 for the Cubs. Then the Padres' relievers came down hard on the Cubs to hold them back from scoring more.
The Padres then brought in Luke Gregerson who pitched a hitless eighth to maintain the Padres lead. Huston Street came in as closer to pitch the ninth for the Padres. Street tossed a hitless and scoreless ninth to wrap up the game with 7-4 win for the Padres, giving the team second consecutive victory in the three-game series whose finale shall be played on Wednesday.
