San Diego Padres trade two relievers to the Florida Marlins for Cameron Maybin
The San Diego Padres improved their offence and defence by trading two right-handed relievers, Ryan Webb and Edward Mujica, to the Florida Marlins for outfielder, Cameron Maybin, on Sunday.
“We traded two good relievers from our bullpen. But we feel like we have some bullpen depth,” said Padres general manager Jed Hoyer. “We have a number of holes we need to fill. We feel like we filled one of them.”
Maybin hit .234 last season with eight home runs and 28 RBIs. He’s only played for four seasons in the Major Leagues, and has had limited playing time so far. Over his career, he’s batted .246 with 13 home runs and 45 RBIs in 548 at-bats. He’s had about
as many career at-bats as an everyday player has in one season.
Not only do the Padres expect his offense to improve as he gains experience against Major League pitching, but they are also excited to have his defence on their field. PETCO Park is big as far as MLB ball parks go, and Maybin’s defence will be a welcome
addition to the team.
“That was a huge part of the appeal," Hoyer said. "He does fit the ballpark so well.”
San Diego gave up a pair of good relievers for Maybin. Webb had an ERA of 2.90 last season, and a 3-1 record while Mujica was 2-1 with an ERA of 3.62. But Hoyer believes that Maybin hasn’t had enough time, or at-bats, to show what he can do, something he
intends to correct.
“We want him to come in here and feel secure he's going to play centre field for us," Hoyer said. “He has the skill set, he has power and can steal bases. I think he's a guy who didn't have a normal path. We think letting him play every day here will help
him realize his potential.”
