San Diego Padres trounce Washington Nationals at 13-4 Petco Park – MLB News
San Diego Padres trounced Washington Nationals 13-4 on Sunday, May 19, 2013, at the Petco Park in front of a 27,000 plus crowd. The Padres’ batters came to the party and did not waste chances to get the scoreboard
moving.
It was a team effort which not only saw some good hitting but also some excellent pitching from the starting pitcher, Andrew Cashner, who only gave away three runs in nearly seven innings.
Manager of the San Diego ballclub Bud Black was pleased by the efforts of his pitcher and said that he was the one who set the tone of the in the game.
"He was efficient early, which set the tone for the game," said Black. "I think that momentum carried him through the game. He wobbled very little."
Bud was also pleased by the fact that there was some seriously good offensive production.
"Today, our bats broke out," Black said.
The Padres got their runs in blocks. They started out with three runs in the first innings to get things underway. Ryan Zimmerman homered in the fourth with one base loaded to cut the lead.
A couple of home-runs in the bottom of the fifth allowed the Padres to get another four run and take their lead to 7-2.
Two more runs in the top of the seventh gave some hope to the Nationals’ camp before a five-run heist by the Padres effectively brought the game to an end. The San Diego efforts were helped by an error on the
part of their Washington counterparts as well.
Yonder Alonso homered in the eighth to make the score line 13-4, which remained till the end of the game.
Hitting coach for the Padres Phil Plantier was pleased by the performance of his team. He felt that the scoring snowballed in a good way and the result came out good.
"Today, it snowballed in the right direction," said Plantier. "Sometimes ... you get rewarded with a big, crooked number."
Nationals’ manager Davey Johnson didn’t like the outcome of the game and felt that the pitching was not up to the general high standards. Dan Haren and the bullpen were both unable to silence the Padres’ bats.
"We didn't pitch very well. We get back in the ballgame. Haren, obviously, didn't have his good stuff. We got back in the ballgame and then our reliable bullpen just didn't do it," Johnson said.
The results leave the Padres at a season record of 20-23 win-loss record. Their recent form particularly with the bat has been really good. Slowly but surely, the Padres are moving in the right direction and
will need to continue the good work for the rest of the season to make an impact and potentially grab a post-season berth.
