San Diego Padres win series after beating Arizona Diamondbacks 5-1 at Petco Park - MLB Update
The San Diego Padres wrapped up the series against the Arizona Diamondbacks on home turf after they defeat their opponents by a big margin of 5-1 on Sunday, May 5, 2013 at Petco Park.
Padres got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first with an RBI single by Chase Headley and then a sacrifice fly by Yonder Alonso. The Diamondbacks pulled it back a little with a solo home-run in the third by Didi Gregorious.
However, they were unable to score again in the match. Padres scored again in the sixth when they got three more runs.
Pitching from the Padres was spot on and starter Edinson Volquez gave up just a single run and four hits in nearly seven innings, recording his third win of the season.
Jedd Gyorko got a two-run long ball followed by Will Venable’s solo effort. The score line of 5-1 at the end of the innings remained the same for the rest of the ball game.
Jedd believes that he got a pitch in the zone where he likes it. Interestingly, he said that it was the same pitch which had gotten him out on a previous at-bat.
"He left a changeup up in the zone … it was the same pitch he got me out on before. He struck me out before on a good changeup. You don't see many right-on-right changeups," Gyorko said.
The hitter also feels that now he is concentrating more on getting the right hits rather than swinging at everything which he did early on.
The 24-year-old sees the current playing experience as an important learning curve as he is getting to know all kinds of pitches that can come his way.
"I'm pretty much seeing a lot of things I haven't seen before," Gyorko said. "My memory bank is getting filled up."
Padres’ manager Bud Black was pleased with the progress that was made by the right-handed hitter who is in his rookie season. The manager felt that he goes by his instinct and should be able to learn a lot quicker than some of the other guys.
"Jedd's a very instinctual player, a very good competitor," Black said. "He figures things out. I think the learning curve will work quicker for him than some."
D-backs manager Kirk Gibson felt that his team did not do well in any areas of the game.
"We didn't have anything going at all," said Gibson.
Padres now have a 13-18 record and the wheels appear to be in motion. The young and the experienced are both playing well together and should the team continue in this fashion, they will be looking to have a good performance this year.
