San Diego State University baseball head coach Tony Gwynn feels good after surgery
The San Diego State University (SDSU) baseball head coach and former San Diego Padres’ talented right-fielder Tony Gwynn is feeling good after a successful removal of a malignant tumor from inside his right cheek.
Lately, Gwynn spoke to the media with great contentment and joy. He said, "I'm already ahead of schedule, Last time, I couldn't lift my eye or close my mouth. This time, my eye can close, my mouth can close. I feel good. I'm talking better than I did last time.”
Later SDSU associate head Coach Mark Martinez said for Gwynn, “He looked great. His spirits were great. It was awesome.” Afterwards, UC San Diego also released a statement that said, “While everything went extremely well and Mr. Gwynn is in good spirits, it is too early to forecast how successful the outcome will be."
Gwynn had a pretty successful career in Major League Baseball spanning 1982 to 2001. But one particular factor about his professional playing career has somewhat appreciated by many as Gwynn never played anywhere else except with the San Diego Padres.
He started his career from the Padres platform and also finished with the club in 2001. He remained consistent throughout his career achieving batting average of .338 along with 3114 hits, 135 home-runs and 1138 RBIs. Winning 15 All-Star selections, five-time Gold Glove Awards and seven-time Silver Slugger honours made him a true living legend in Major League Baseball history. While many have predicted in the past as he will someday manage the San Diego’s top team but it still looked a far-cry for several reasons.
Earlier, before his surgery, when several baseball experts and reporters asked Gwynn about managing the Padres’ franchise, he not only denied any future affiliation with them but he also stated in the media that he needs still some time to coach at MLB level. He further explained as his University baseball team is in a revival period and until his team becomes somewhat stable, he will not be going anywhere.
