San Francisco's Buster Posey injured after plate-crash against Florida Marlins - MLB News
Buster Posey of the reigning World Series Champions team, the San Francisco Giants is the latest Major League player to get injured as the trend continues.
American League Most Valued Player, Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers just returned to the field after being sent to the Disabled List for a month after diving head first into a base and just recently, Jorge De La Rosa, the Colorado Rockies pitching ace
suffered a season ending injury.
These are only two players out of the many who have fallen under the injury curse that seems to bewitch Major League Baseball’s aces this season.
In the game between the Giants and the Marlins, Scott Cousins got the winning run of the game after he put a shoulder to Buster Posey’s chest in one of the most dangerous and unnecessary plays in baseball. Posey’s ankle got caught beneath him and he rotated
because of the impact. The twist put unwanted force on his knees and that is how Posey’s flourishing career ended this season.
Posey’s broken ankles has robbed the Giants of one of their most reliable players who was hitting .287 along with 21 RBI’s and three steals since the season began.
Upon watching replays of the video of Cousin’s collision, Posey can be seen setting up slightly in front of the plate. Although it was not an unfair or dirty play, Cousins clearly had time to slide around Posey so he could go to the back of the plate instead
of Posey’s chest. Expecting Cousin to make a split second decision like this when the whole match depends on him is a bit unfair. Had he done that, the Marlins surely would have booed him for going soft on Posey. Now he has to face the wrath of the Giants’
fans who have called him every possible name under the sun.
Although Cousin does not regret the play that bagged the Marlins their win, he does regret Posey getting injured. He said, ‘’I committed to it. I went in there hard. My instinct was just to check and make sure everyone was OK. I wanted to be a good sportsman
about it. It is part of the game, but it’s a hard-nosed part of the game. I wanted to knock the ball clean out of his glove, but I certainly didn’t want him to get hurt.”
Every collision on the field comes with risks and this was surely an unfortunate play. Jeff Berry, Posey’s agent wants to change that. "You leave players way too vulnerable," Berry said. "I can tell you Major League Baseball is less than it was before [Posey's
injury]. It's stupid. I don't know if this ends up leading to a rule change, but it should. The guy [at the plate] is too exposed.’’
Berry has contacted Major League Baseball and the Player’s Union to bring to the attention the problems of having players deliberately colliding into each other.
