San Francisco 49ers’ DB Donte Whitner: We are going to be number 1 defence next season – NFL News
San Francisco 49ers’ defensive back, Donte Whitner, who has earned respect from fans and players after playing just one National Football League (NFL) season for the team, has set high hopes for the 2012 NFL season, saying that 49ers would be the best defence
this year.
49ers are already strong on defence, thanks to the presence of players like Whitner and when he is claiming to the best while suggesting that there is room for further improvement, his remarks cannot be taken lightly.
Whitner is attending the team’s offseason strength programme and the player believes that by spending time with each other, his team members will be able to develop strong chemistry, which will help them win games next season.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, Whitner said:
“This year you can expect guys to fly around a lot faster without hesitation and really understand what the scheme is and what we’re trying to do to offensive football teams.”
He added:
“And I believe that we’re going to be the No. 1 defence in the National Football League this year. The guys believe it and we just have to go out there, work and prove it.”
Whitner started his professional NFL career in 2006 with the Buffalo Bills. After playing five seasons with the Bills, he joined the 49ers last year.
He played and started 15 games in the last regular season and recorded a total of 62 tackles and two interceptions.
49ers were impressive throughout the last season. They qualified for the playoffs after winning 13 games in the regular season and defeated New Orleans Saints in the playoffs.
In the National Football Conference (NFC) championship game, however, 49ers faced defeat against the New York Giants who went on to win the Super Bowl title.
In order to achieve better results next season, Whitner has urged his team members to give their best shot and make everything count.
He said:
“If we can do that – playing with intentions on really beating teams and not just winning football games – I believe we’ll be right back in the same spot as last year.”
49ers are looking passionate but they must be aware of the fact that other teams are also working to overcome their flaws and the former is not going to face easy opponents in 2012.
