San Francisco 49ers’ Donte Whitner recalls playing against Randy Moss – NFL News
Defensive back, Donte Whitner, and wide receiver, Randy Moss, are going to play for the San Francisco 49ers in the 2012 National Football League (NFL) season, but both players have faced each other while they were playing for separate teams of the American Football Conference (AFC).
Whitner, who has already spent one season with the 49ers, shared his experience of playing against Moss during a television show recently and said that Moss is certainly a force to reckon with.
Before joining the 49ers, Whitner played five seasons for the Buffalo Bills. He faced Moss when the receiver was playing for the New England Patriots.
Whitner highlighted that Moss takes long strides while running. This, the safety said, confuses many defensemen who want to block him.
Whitner also said that many defence strategies used to fail when it comes to blocking Moss.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, Whitner said of Moss:
“It’s very deceptive for a safety when you have a guy who’s a long strider. As a safety, when you have a guy with that skill level and the things that he can do going up and getting the football, it really makes you nervous.”
He added:
“I know what he can do on the football field. I know the types of things defences try to do against him and a lot of stuff doesn’t work.”
Moss announced retirement from the league after playing the 2010 season, but after a year, he took the retirement decision back and made himself available for the interested teams.
49ers gave him a one-year contract and the veteran is not only expected to play well for the team, but also act like a mentor for young receivers.
The presence of other receivers is certainly going to increase competition for Moss, but it is something that the player also wants to do.
Recently, 49ers’ head coach, Jim Harbaugh, also said that Moss wanted to compete and that the team would provide him the opportunity to do so.
Whitner also thinks that Moss is getting along with the young receivers, especially Michael Crabtree, quite nicely and said:
“They talk a little smack to each other here and there, but that’s just the competitive nature of two really good football players. They’re going to make each other a lot better.”
