San Francisco 49ers’ Jason Slowey starts at centre, position can still change – NFL News
San Francisco 49ers’ sixth-round pick in the 2012 National Football League (NFL) draft, Jason Slowey, started the team’s three-day rookie minicamp at centre on Friday, May 11, 2012, but head coach, Jim Harbaugh, thinks that the player’s position might change
in the days to come.
Slowey was drafted to serve as offensive lineman and hence his services can be utilised at the position of centre, guard and offensive tackle.
It was initially a bit difficult for Slowey to adjust and play at the mentioned position, but he got used to if it after making a rough start; something that the player also acknowledged.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, Slowey said of playing at centre:
“It’s an adjustment, that’s for sure.”
He added:
“I made a lot of progress today. I started out a little rough, a little shaky – putting some balls on the ground – but towards the end I started to get a hang of it a little more. I felt more comfortable so I’m looking forward to going out there this afternoon.”
During the three-day minicamp, the players are expected to get well acquainted with the playbook and showcase their talent, which will help coaches decide where to best utilise the rookies in future.
Slowey is confident of playing at any given position, but 49ers have not yet decided where to put him.
While taking to media representatives, head coach, Jim Harbaugh, said that he was still deciding where the player would fit and that he wanted to see him play more.
Harbaugh said:
“Well, we’ll see. We don’t know what his best position is. That’s why we’re out here. We’re going to find out what all these guys’ best position is. Who’s better at each position. That’s the goal.”
When asked about how different it was to be playing for a professional league team as compared to college football, Slowey admitted that it was slightly difficult to get familiar with the playing conditions of the professional league.
He was of the view that the professional league is more demanding, but maintained that he would give his best shot to match the standards of other pros.
