San Francisco 49ers’ QB Alex Smith on OTAs: It’s not relax time – NFL News
San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback, Alex Smith, knows what his head coach, Jim Harbaugh, wants from the team as the players continue workouts during the ongoing organised team activities (OTAs).
In his first season as the head coach in 2011, Harbaugh led the team to winning the National Football Conference (NFC) West division title after ending a long drought and the coach wants more from the team in the upcoming season.
This is the reason that he is supervising OTAs strictly without letting the momentum slow down and Smith knows that ‘it is not relax time’ for him or for any other player.
The loss against the New York Giants in the NFC championship game last year is still fresh in minds of 49ers and they are desperate to get a shot at the Super Bowl title.
When asked about the difference between the training and workouts during regular season and offseason, Smith told The Sacramento Bee:
"Let me tell you, things have not changed. If you talk to anybody about the first day of Football School and it was like, 'Holy smokes.' I think it blew everyone's mind. I know Randy (Moss) came out here and was like, 'Holy smokes.' It was 100 miles per
hour. This coaching staff, coach Harbaugh, only knows one speed. It's not 'relax' time, it's full throttle even more."
The offseason is proving beneficial for Smith as well because he is receiving good practice in presence of many competent players on the roster.
49ers have a strong receiving corps in Randy Moss, Mario Manningham and rookie, A. J. Jenkins, and they are providing a good practice to Smith.
Harbaugh himself has acknowledged that the offseason will prove very beneficial for the quarterback who has worked really hard on his mechanics during the offseason.
Meanwhile, Harbaugh also shed light on the ongoing OTAs and said that he was impressed with the response of the players in this voluntary exercise.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, Harbaugh said that every player was giving his best shot. He said:
“Guys have been working fanatically. Our veterans have definitely done that. The rookies that have been here for the past two weeks, they’ve seen a great example, and they’re busting their tails.”
