San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis praises Colin Kaepernick, backs Alex Smith as starter – NFL News
San Francisco 49ers veteran tight end Vernon Davis has praised quarterback Colin Kaepernick for his performance in the last few games, but the tight end still thinks that Alex Smith is the best man to start for the 49ers.
Smith was injured during Week 10 game against St. Louis Rams and replaced by Kaepernick. The backup quarterback started the next two games which were won by the 49ers.
Davis has no doubts on the abilities and talent of Kaepernick, but he still believes that Smith must get the starting role.
After defeating New Orleans Saints in Week 12 game in which Kaepernick scored a passing as well as rushing touchdown, Davis said of Kaepernick:
“I think he (Colin Kaepernick) did a great job today. When I see him play, I see a playmaker. He has so much ability and he’s always helping his team out. It’s a difficult situation he’s in, but he’s doing great.”
It must be noted that Smith suffered a concussion and was not able to play Week 11 game against Chicago Bears. However, he had reportedly cleared all the National Football League (NFL) protocols and was declared fit to play against Saints, but the team still
decided to go with Kaepernick.
49ers are going to face the Rams next week and they have not yet decided anything about their starting quarterback. Davis has maintained that it is up to the coaches to decide the starting quarterback. He said:
“I still think Alex (Smith) is the man. But it’s the coaches’ call and I am sure Coach Harbaugh will make the right decision.”
Meanwhile, 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh and other players have also appreciated Kaepernick for his recent performances.
The game against Saints was especially crucial because the Saints were hosting it, but Kaepernick did well to lead the offence. The stadium was filled with fans shouting for their team. It was a bit difficult for Kaepernick to deal with the noise, but he
managed to do well. He said:
“It was real loud at times and we had to work on communicating the plays early on to be effective. I had to audible a lot to communicate to the guys what we were doing.”
